Blocked gutters are the cheapest expensive problem a house has. Left full, they overflow under the roofline, into the eaves and down the wall cavity — and once water reaches ceilings and framing, the repair bill routinely runs five figures. The clean itself is simple. Doing it without getting hurt is the actual skill.
Safety first, genuinely
Ladder falls during home maintenance are one of the most common serious DIY injuries in Australia. Non-negotiables: a sturdy ladder on firm, level ground, extended a metre past the gutter line; three points of contact; never lean sideways — climb down and move the ladder instead; never work alone; and never stand on the gutter or the roof edge. If any part of the roofline is over a second storey, a sloped surface or a garden bed that won’t hold a ladder safely, stop reading the DIY section.
The method
- Gloves on, scoop out. Work along the gutter clearing leaf litter and sludge into a bucket hooked to the ladder — not onto the garden below, where it stains paving and smothers plants.
- Work toward the downpipe, not away from it, so debris doesn’t get pushed into the outlet.
- Flush with a hose once the bulk is out. This shows you the thing scooping can’t: whether water actually flows.
- Test every downpipe. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it’s the one that matters. A gutter can look immaculate and still overflow, because the blockage is a compacted plug at the downpipe bend or in the stormwater line below. Run the hose into each outlet and watch it exit at the bottom. If it doesn’t run clear, the job isn’t done.
- Check while you’re up there: rust spots, sagging brackets, failed joints, cracked flashing. Five minutes of looking now beats finding out in a storm.
How often
Most Sydney homes: twice a year. Under mature figs or gums — which describes half the North Shore and a good slice of the Eastern Suburbs — quarterly is realistic. The critical timing is before summer storm season: a gutter that’s been filling all winter meets its first big downpour in November.

Two storeys, steep or fragile roofs, long runs, or downpipes that won’t clear with a hose — that’s where the maths flips.
