Maroubra covers a lot of ground and changes character as you move through it. The beachfront streets take full ocean exposure and behave like Coogee or Bronte; the streets back toward Pagewood and Kingsford are more sheltered, with larger blocks, proper driveways and less salt.

Beachside versus back streets

Near the beach, salt is the dominant issue — render, glass, aluminium and stainless all carry a constant film, and mould establishes fast on the shaded elevations. Those properties do best on an annual house wash.

Further inland, salt matters far less and the work shifts to driveways, paths, brickwork and roofs. Blocks are bigger here, so driveway and concrete cleaning makes up a much larger share of the job.

Brick, render and interwar homes

Maroubra has a lot of solid brick and rendered housing from the interwar and post-war periods, plus a substantial amount of newer development. Face brick holds mould in the mortar joints and needs treating rather than blasting; render and paint must be soft washed, never pressure washed, or you’ll strip and blow out patches.

Terracotta and concrete tile roofs here are frequently heavy with lichen, particularly on the shaded southern pitches — treated and cleaned at low pressure through our roof cleaning so tiles aren’t cracked and the growth doesn’t simply return.
