Paver Cleaning & Sealing

Paved areas fail in a particular way: the joints go first. Moss and weeds colonise the sand between the units, water gets in, the sand washes out, and pavers that were laid perfectly begin to rock and drift. What looks like a dirty patio is usually a paved surface part-way through that cycle — and a proper clean interrupts it.

What paver cleaning actually involves

A professional paver clean is a four-stage job, and skipping any stage shows within months:

1. Treat. Moss, weeds, lichen and black algae are treated with a biocide and given time to die back. Growth that’s blasted rather than killed regrows from the root.
2. Clean. A rotary surface cleaner lifts the film, staining and dead growth evenly, at a pressure matched to the paver — clay brick and aged concrete units are far softer than new concrete and stripe permanently if they’re hit too hard. Oil, rust and tannin stains get their own chemistry first.
3. Re-sand. Cleaning inevitably strips jointing sand. We re-sand the joints — with polymeric sand where appropriate, which sets firm and resists weed germination and washout.
4. Seal. An impregnating sealer stops oil, tannin and salt soaking in, locks the jointing sand, and roughly doubles the time the area stays clean.

Pavers we work on

Clay and concrete brick pavers, large-format concrete units, bluestone and granite setts, cobblestones, travertine and limestone pavers (treated as soft stone — chemistry first, gentle rinse), and permeable paving systems.

The Eastern Suburbs pattern

Under the fig and jacaranda canopy through Woollahra, Queens Park and Randwick, paving stains brown with leaf tannin and greens over fast in the shade. Near the coast, salt works into the joints and accelerates the breakdown. Both are reasons sealing earns its keep here more than almost anywhere — sealed pavers shed what unsealed pavers absorb.
