You paid for the ocean view. So it’s genuinely maddening when the glass between you and it never seems clean — wiped on Saturday, hazy again by Wednesday. Along the coastal strip from Coogee through South Coogee to Maroubra, this is the single most common complaint we hear, and it has a specific cause.
What the haze actually is
Onshore wind carries microscopic salt water droplets that land on your glass and evaporate, leaving salt crystals behind. Each sea mist, each southerly buster adds a layer. Household glass cleaner dissolves some of it and smears the rest — which is why the glass looks streaky in raking afternoon light no matter how carefully you wipe.
Left long enough, it gets worse than cosmetic. Salt is mildly corrosive to glass; combined with hard-water minerals from sprinklers or run-off, it can etch a permanent milky stain into the surface — what the industry calls stage-two mineral staining. At that point no amount of cleaning restores it; the glass needs polishing or replacement.
How coastal glass should be cleaned
Proper coastal window cleaning uses pure (deionised) water and enough of it to actually dissolve and flush the salt off the pane, frame and tracks — not redistribute it. Pure water dries spot-free because there’s nothing dissolved in it to leave behind. For established mineral haze, a cerium-based glass polish can often restore panes that owners assumed were ruined.
Frames and tracks matter as much as the glass: salt sitting in aluminium tracks corrodes rollers and seals, and it’s the reason so many beachfront sliding doors grind.
The realistic schedule
Front-line ocean glass — the strips along Marine Parade and Malabar Road — really needs professional cleaning quarterly to stay clear and avoid etching. One street back, twice a year usually holds.
