Travertine Cleaning & Sealing

Travertine has quietly become the Eastern Suburbs’ default pool-surround and terrace stone — silver and ivory pavers laid around pools from Coogee to Vaucluse for their cool, matte, barefoot-friendly finish. What the stone yards don’t emphasise: travertine is one of the most maintenance-sensitive stones you can lay outdoors, and how it’s cleaned and sealed decides whether it looks luxurious or grubby within two summers.

Travertine cleaning — working with a stone full of holes

Travertine is formed by mineral springs, and its signature character comes from natural voids running through the stone. Outdoors, those pores and pits are the problem: they trap dirt, pool sunscreen, leaf litter and moisture, and black algae colonises inside them where a mop never reaches. High pressure makes it dramatically worse — it blows the edges of the pits open, enlarges the holes, pops factory hole-fill, and leaves the surface rougher and hungrier for grime than before. Our travertine cleaning is chemistry-led: a stone-safe, pH-matched cleaner and biocide that penetrates the pores and kills growth where it lives, followed by a controlled low-pressure rinse that lifts everything out without opening the stone up. And because travertine, like limestone, is calcium carbonate, nothing acidic ever touches it — acid etches this stone permanently on contact.

Travertine sealing — the maintenance decision that matters most

Unsealed travertine absorbs everything: chlorinated and salt pool water, sunscreen and body oils, red wine on the terrace, tannin from overhanging trees. Around a salt-chlorinated pool — which is most pools here — salt gets drawn into the pores, crystallises, and slowly pits and crumbles the stone from the inside. A breathable impregnating sealer changes the equation completely: it lines the pores so water, oil and salt bead and rinse off instead of soaking in, while leaving the stone matte, natural-looking and — critically for a pool surround — no more slippery than it was. We don’t use glossy film coatings on travertine: they turn a safe honed surface into a skating rink when wet and fail by peeling in coastal sun. Freshly laid travertine should be sealed within its first season; established stone should be cleaned, dried and sealed before summer. Resealing is typically needed every two to four years depending on exposure — the water-bead test tells you when.
