Weatherboard needs the gentlest hand of all

The village’s historic fishermen’s cottages are painted timber weatherboard — the single most pressure-sensitive exterior there is. High pressure strips paint, raises grain, drives water behind the boards and into a wall cavity with no modern moisture barrier. Weatherboard is soft washed only: low pressure, mild solution, patient rinse. Done right, a wash brings painted timber back remarkably and defers repainting by years.

Double-sided salt exposure

Harbour-facing homes take steady salt off the water; anything near The Gap takes genuine ocean blast. Salt film on glass, aluminium frames and painted surfaces builds continuously, and on timber homes it holds moisture against the paint, feeding the mould that shows first on the shaded southern side. An annual wash is the realistic cycle here — this is not an 18-month suburb.
