Exterior Cleaning & Salt Removal in Tamarama, NSW
Gully-side homes with the heaviest salt exposure on the coast walk.
Tamarama is tiny, steep and takes the ocean head-on. The beach sits in a narrow gully that funnels the southerly straight up between the houses, so salt spray reaches further inland here than the suburb’s size suggests — homes three streets back behave like beachfront.
The gully effect
The funnelling wind means salt lands on everything, while the gully’s steep sides shade the lower streets for much of the day. Salt plus shade is the worst combination an exterior faces: the salt holds moisture against the surface and the shade stops it drying, so mould and black algae establish faster here than almost anywhere on the coast walk.
Steep sites, exposed materials
Housing is a mix of renovated cottages and contemporary builds stepping down the gully — render, glass balustrades, stainless, timber decks and a great deal of external stairs. Render and paint are soft washed only. Glass and stainless need salt off regularly before it hazes and pits. Timber decks take low pressure and the right cleaner, then oil. And external stairs with algae are a genuine slip hazard on a slope this steep — treating them is safety work, not cosmetics.
Access
Many Tamarama properties are reached by shared stairs and paths rather than driveways. We carry compact equipment and our own water where needed, and plan runoff carefully so nothing washes down into a neighbour below.
Recommended cycle
Annual house washing at minimum, with a mid-year salt rinse of glass, stainless and frames on the most exposed homes. This is the shortest maintenance cycle we recommend anywhere in the east, and the suburb earns it. Request a quote today.
