Queen Street is Woollahra’s main shopping street, lined with Victorian and Edwardian shops occupied by galleries, boutiques, antique dealers and cafes. It is part of the Queen Street precinct of the Woollahra heritage conservation area.
Council’s controls for retail buildings there state that removing or altering original shopfronts is not permitted, except for restoration or reconstruction. The shopfront is part of the heritage.
What is on a Queen Street shopfront
Timber shopfront frames and stallboards, large display glass, leadlight or etched transoms, tiled or terrazzo entry floors, recessed doorways, cast iron or timber verandah posts and awnings, and painted or rendered upper façades with parapets.
Each needs a different cleaning method, and some are irreplaceable.
Glass
Display glass needs regular cleaning for presentation. Leadlight and etched glass in transoms is cleaned gently by hand; the lead is soft and old putty fails. Water-fed poles with purified water clean upper glass without ladders on the footpath. More: window cleaning.
Timber shopfronts
Painted timber frames and stallboards are cleaned with mild detergent and soft brushes, never pressure, which drives water into joints and lifts paint. Repaint in suitable heritage colours.
Entry floors
Original tiled and terrazzo entries are vulnerable. Acid etches terrazzo and marble and damages grout. Pressure loosens tiles. Use neutral cleaners and gentle scrubbing. More: outdoor tile cleaning.
Verandahs and awnings
Verandah posts, brackets and awnings collect grime and bird droppings on top where nobody looks. Gutters on awnings block with leaves. Clean them and check them. More: awning cleaning.
Upper façades
Rendered upper façades streak under sills and parapets. Soft wash at low pressure. This is usually landlord or strata work, not the tenant’s. More: how to clean render.
The footpath and stormwater
Footpaths are council’s. Work on them may need approval, and runoff must not go into stormwater pits. More: stormwater rules.
Graffiti
Graffiti on heritage surfaces needs surface-appropriate removal: solvents on paint can damage original finishes, and pressure on sandstone or brick leaves a ghost. More: graffiti removal by surface.
Timing
Outside trading hours, early mornings or Sundays where noise rules allow. Regular glass cleaning weekly or fortnightly; deeper cleans quarterly.
Why it is worth doing well
Queen Street’s character is what draws customers. An original shopfront that is clean and well kept is part of a business’s presentation and part of the street’s. Damage from heavy-handed cleaning, such as etched terrazzo, scoured stone, or water-damaged timber, cannot easily be undone and may need heritage approval to repair.
Landlord and tenant
Lease terms decide who cleans what. Typically tenants handle shopfront glass and the entry, while landlords or strata handle upper facades, awnings and building-wide work. Agreeing it in writing avoids gaps where nobody cleans the awning gutter or the upper windows. More: commercial pressure cleaning.
