Gutter cleaning is the most searched exterior service in Sydney, at around 1,300 searches a month, and it peaks in January and September. Bellevue Hill gives that demand plenty of reason. The suburb’s mature trees are one of its defining features, and every one of them drops into a gutter somewhere.
What comes out of Bellevue Hill gutters
Fig leaves and fruit, which are leathery, slow to break down, and stain fascias with tannin where gutters overflow. Eucalypt leaves, bark ribbons and nuts, where the bark is what actually blocks a downpipe. Jacaranda flowers in late spring, which turn into a slick sludge. Deciduous leaves in autumn, in volume. And on older roofs, granules shed from tiles. More: what’s actually in a Sydney gutter.
The mix matters because each tree drops at a different time. A property under a fig and a jacaranda has a different calendar to one under gums.
How often
Twice a year is a minimum on most Bellevue Hill properties. Three times is realistic under heavy canopy: late autumn after leaf fall, early spring before storm season, and once timed to whichever tree dominates your roof.
The test is simple. If you have seen your gutters overflow in a storm, or found plants growing in them, the interval is too long. More: how often gutters should be cleaned.
Box gutters: the expensive kind of blockage
Many of the larger Federation and Inter-War houses have box gutters: gutters set inside the roof line, behind parapets or between roof sections. When an eaves gutter overflows, water goes over the edge onto the garden. When a box gutter overflows, water goes into the house.
Box gutters block at the outlet, usually a rainwater head or a sump. A small amount of debris at the outlet holds back a large volume of water in a storm. They need clearing at every visit and the outlet checking, not just the visible channel. More: box gutters and shared walls.
Downpipes
A clean gutter with a blocked downpipe still overflows. On a big house with multiple downpipes, and often underground stormwater lines that have been in the ground for decades, each one needs a flow test. Hosing debris down a downpipe to clear the gutter just moves the blockage underground. More: blocked downpipes.
Gutter guards under figs and gums
Worth considering, with realistic expectations. Guards reduce volume but do not eliminate cleaning. Fine debris, fig fruit and bark still collect on top or pass through, and a guard that is not maintained can hold debris in place. More: are gutter guards worth it.
Access on the hill
Bellevue Hill is steep. Many properties sit above or below the street, with gutters a long way off the ground on the downhill side. Two-storey downhill elevations often need roof access rather than ladders. That affects price and time, and it is a good reason to have someone look before quoting. More: how access changes a quote.
