Bellevue Hill is built on a ridge, and most properties deal with the slope somehow: sandstone retaining walls holding up terraced gardens, steep driveways, long flights of steps from the street, and sandstone bedrock showing through in places.
These structures share one job, which is managing water and soil on a hill. That is also what decides how they should be cleaned.
Retaining walls: read the stain before you clean it
Staining on a retaining wall is often a message about what is behind it. Rust-coloured streaks, white efflorescence, constant dampness at one spot, or green growth that returns quickly after cleaning usually mean water is coming through the wall rather than running down it.
Retaining walls are meant to drain. Old sandstone walls often have weep holes that have long since blocked, and newer walls may have drainage behind them that has silted up. A wall that cannot drain builds water pressure behind it, and that is how walls bulge and fail.
So the first step is checking the weep holes and the base, not reaching for a hose. More: retaining wall cleaning.
Cleaning the sandstone
Sydney sandstone blackens over time with biological growth and soiling. The face is soft and bedded in layers. High pressure erodes it, opens the bedding planes, and leaves a scoured, pitted surface that soils faster than before. Acid cleaners dissolve the natural cement that holds the grains together.
The right approach is low pressure, a biocide with dwell time for the black growth, and patience. Old sandstone walls may never return to the colour of freshly cut stone, and should not be forced to. More: how to clean sandstone walls and why Sydney sandstone turns black.
Woollahra’s heritage controls protect sandstone walls and fences in the conservation areas, so a damaged wall cannot simply be rebuilt to a different standard. Gentle methods matter here. More: heritage controls in Bellevue Hill.
Steep driveways
A steep concrete or paved driveway is a slip risk when wet and a water channel in a storm. Organic film and moss in the shaded sections make it worse, and tyre marks and oil collect where cars brake and turn.
Cleaning a steep driveway is done with a rotary surface cleaner for even results, with stain treatments for oil and tannin separately. The runoff needs managing: on a steep site it runs fast toward the street and the stormwater pit at the bottom, and it should not. More: driveway cleaning and where the dirty water goes.
Check the driveway’s own drainage while it is clean: the grate or channel drain across the bottom is often half full of silt, which means the next storm runs into the garage. More: slip resistance on outdoor surfaces.
Steps and stairs
Sandstone steps are worn by feet and wet much of the year in shade. Clean them gently, prioritise slip resistance, and look for loose treads. A penetrating sealer can reduce growth, but some sealers make sandstone more slippery, so test first. More: should sandstone be sealed after cleaning.
Timing
Clean in a dry spell in spring or early summer, when walls and paving can dry out afterwards. Inspect retaining walls after the wettest part of the year, March to June. For everything else, see the Bellevue Hill maintenance calendar and our sandstone cleaning service.
