How we clean it, and how we protect everything around it

Fresh oil is emulsified with an alkaline degreaser and extracted with hot water before it penetrates. Older stains have soaked into the capillaries and need a poultice: an absorbent paste loaded with solvent that is left on for several hours to a day, drawing the oil up as it dries, then removed and the area cleaned. Porous stone gets a conservation-grade poultice with no acidic or caustic content. Two rounds are sometimes needed and we price for that.
