Fine jointing sand mixed with a binder that sets when wetted, locking the joint against weeds, ants and wash-out. It is used on driveways and sloped paving where ordinary sand washes away.

Q: Gloss or natural finish?

Most Eastern Suburbs and North Shore clients choose a natural or lightly enhanced finish from a penetrating sealer, which does not peel or yellow. Gloss film-forming sealers suit some modern courtyards but need stripping and reapplying every few years.

Paver problems are joint problems. Once the sand washes out, weeds and ants move in, pavers rock and stains soak into the open edges. Sealing without re-sanding locks the problem in. We clean the pavers, let them dry, re-sand the joints and then apply a sealer suited to the paver, either a breathable penetrating sealer for a natural look or a joint-stabilising sealer that binds the sand.

City of Sydney. The City of Sydney has detailed rules for working on and over footpaths, including permits for scaffolding and elevated work platforms. Strata and commercial window-cleaning in this LGA is typically scheduled early morning to meet council and building-management noise windows.

How we clean it, and how we protect everything around it

Sealing follows a full clean by at least 48 hours of dry weather. We re-sand the joints, sweep off excess and confirm the pavers are dry with a moisture meter. Penetrating sealers are applied by low-pressure sprayer and back-rolled; joint-stabilising sealers are flooded into the joints so the sand sets. A second coat follows once the first has cured. Film-forming gloss sealers are used only where the client wants that look and the surface suits it, because they can trap moisture and peel.
