Q: Why does my limestone have dull spots?

Those are etch marks from acid: citrus, wine, vinegar or an acidic cleaner. Sealing does not prevent etching, only staining. Light etching can be honed out on a return visit; prevention is a pH-neutral cleaner and prompt wiping.

Q: Will sealing make limestone slippery?

An impregnating sealer does not change the surface texture, so slip resistance stays as it was. Film-forming sealers can reduce grip and we do not use them on pool surrounds.

Q: How soon after installation should new limestone be sealed?

Once grout and adhesive have cured and the stone is dry, usually two to four weeks. Many installers skip it. If your limestone was laid unsealed, we clean and seal it as one job.

Limestone is pale, porous and alkaline, which means it stains from wine, citrus and leaf tannin and it etches from anything acidic including the wrong cleaner. Sealing does not stop etching but it stops absorption, which is most of the problem. We clean limestone with pH-neutral chemistry, let it dry and seal it with an impregnator chosen for its finish, honed or tumbled, interior-adjacent or pool-side.

Our method

How we clean it, and how we protect everything around it

Limestone is never cleaned with acid, which dissolves it. We use a pH-neutral stone cleaner, poultice organic and oil stains, rinse at low pressure and allow 48 dry hours. The sealer is a penetrating impregnator; for pool coping and barbecue areas we choose one rated for oil repellence. It is sprayed and back-rolled, kept wet for the dwell time and buffed off before it hazes. Honed limestone gets a second coat after cure. We leave a care sheet because the biggest threat to sealed limestone is the next bottle of bathroom cleaner.
